.nixon brett evans.

He's finally here!  Our little boy made his big debut February 28th at 1:23 pm.  He weighed in at 8 lbs 3 oz.  He was 20 1/2 inches long.  He was born with a lot of dark hair and navy blue eyes and a big set of lungs. Did I mention he was a bit stubborn?

This is the story of  my little man. My Dr. (Dr. Healy, awesome man!) had scheduled to induce me Sunday, February 27th at 9pm.  I had worked up until the day before my induction to help me to keep my mind occupied.  I will admit I was terrified of labor and delivery.   I had been told so many horror stories throughout my pregnancy that I was expecting the worst.  Nic and I left our house about 8:30 to head to the hospital.  I was getting really anxious.  Dr. Healy arrived the same time we did so the nurse showed us to our room and I changed into the most sexy gown.  She hooked me up to an IV (which hurt worse than the epidural did) and then Dr. Healy came in to break my water and check me, I was still only dilated to a 2 and close to 70% effaced.  After he left, the nurse hooked me up to Pitocin to start making my contractions stronger and closer together.  I was told I could have my epidural at any time, but I wasn't in any pain at that point and nurse recommended that I hold off, as the epidural could slow down my labor.  She started me off at 4mm and told me she would increase it by 4 every half an hour or so until I reached a 20.  She told me to let her know when I felt like I needed an epidural because she would have to call for the anesthesiologist who was 15 minutes away.  Around 1 am I was on the maximum dose of pitocin (20) and I was more then ready for that epidural.  She called for the anesthesiologist (which ended up taking 45 min) When he got there, I started getting very nervous.  This was the part I had feared the most.  It ended up being a breeze.  Nic held my hand and I tried to talk to him to keep my mind off of what was going on behind me.  The only thing I felt was the shot to numb my back, and that was only a little pinch.  After that, I kept waiting for there to be a more painful poke, but it never happened.  Once I had my epidural, I was good to go.  By that time I had only dilated to a 2.5!  I couldn't believe it.  I thought for sure I was further along than that.  I knew it was going to be a long night. At that point we were both exhausted and tried to get as much sleep as we possibly could.  The nurses were in and out the whole night checking on me and making sure everything with baby were ok.  My blood pressure was really low but Nixon was doing great so they weren't very worried.  At about 7 am the nurse came to see how far along I was and I was surprised to hear I was at a 7 and about 90% effaced.  Dr. Healy then came to check and told me it was more like a 6 instead of a 7, so we rested some more.  At about 10 am my nurse came to check me and I was completely dilated and babies head had dropped into position.  She told me she would start setting up and have me start pushing to see what kind of a pusher I was.  It was about 11 am when I finally started to push.  Within the first couple of pushes they could see his head.  The nurse and Nic both said, "he's got a lot of dark hair!"  I started thinking, wow he is going to be here in no time!  Boy was I wrong.  For the next hour and a half I pushed and pushed and his head would not budge!  The nurse kept saying just a little more and I will call the Dr. over and we will get this baby delivered.  I finally got his head to come down a tiny bit further and at the point the nurse told me Dr. Healy was on his way over and the girl in the next room was just pushes away from delivery so he would deliver her first then be over to help deliver Nixon.  So I got a nice 20 minute break from pushing ( which was sooo needed, that was the hardest part for me)  Dr. Healy came over as soon as he had delivered the baby next door.  It took me about another hour to get that little boy out.  His poor little head was so cone shaped!  I can't describe the feeling I felt when I heard him cry for the first time and they set that little body on me.  It was such an amazing experience.  They took Nixon and started cleaning him off and Nic was over taking pictures.  At that point I felt like a race car making a pit stop.  Everything started happening so fast.  The nurses and Dr. were cleaning up so fast, changing sheets and cleaning up. They brought me my little boy and then came the visitors.  My mom was out in the waiting room so she was the first one there.  Nic's mom and sister got there about 5-10 minutes after that.  Nic asked if he could hold Nixon for a minute, which ended up being more like an hour!  After that they took Nixon to bathe him and give him his first shots and we were then moved to another room.  We had a lot of visitors for the next couple days, along with nurses checking in every hour or so on both Nixon and I.  It was a mad house.  The boys got to come see him and I have to admit that was the cutest thing I have ever seen.  They love Nixon so much and they were so sweet with him. We are finally home and so glad to be out of the hospital.  We have had so much awesome help from our family and feel so grateful that we were so lucky to have such a healthy little boy.
